Founded in 2012 by Neil McGarry, the non-profit Bay Colony Shakespeare Company is a 501(c)3 theatre education organization with a mission to entertain the audience, encourage the actor and educate the student. We strive to produce dynamic, engaging, and inspirational productions for students and theatre-goers of all ages, backgrounds, and communities.
BCSC is dedicated to bringing the greatest stories of the ages to the people. Our vibrant and vivid productions reflect the rich tapestry of life, with the hope that audiences will walk away from our work inspired and invigorated. No matter whatever and wherever they come from, they will leave our productions a little wiser, kinder, braver and more hopeful in the challenges to come. Our belief is grounded in the idea that all parts equal the whole – from our actors, directors, crew and designers, to all of our audiences. Furthermore, we believe that the company is truly one being, dedicated to the growth of us all through the transformative powers of experiencing the works of the world’s greatest authors.
BCSC’s incorporation as a not-for-profit in early 2013 was the culmination of decades of classical work by founder and Artistic Director Neil McGarry. Originally structured to present main stage, fully realized productions of Shakespeare to Massachusetts audiences, the company quickly found the South Shore a friendly home to its work and with the addition of Ross MacDonald as Associate Artistic Director and several artistic Associates, mounted several well-reviewed productions in various locations throughout the region.
In 2015, after his remarkable solo performance of ‘A Christmas Story’ (a presentation he has continued to bring to New England each holiday season), Neil made the decision to leave the country and move to Europe for personal reasons. Enter new Executive Director and President Eric Joseph, who, along with Ross MacDonald as Artistic Director, made the decision to pivot away from main stage and become solely educational in focus. The Performance In Education, or PIE touring series was born and has made the company the only non-profit in the region that is exclusively dedicated to bringing Shakespeare into schools. No main stage productions or acting camps and classes – the BCSC brings the bard to students and holds workshops and talkbacks designed to further understanding of the greatest writing the world has ever known.
We are a full 501 (c)3 and incorporated as a registered Massachusetts non-profit organization.
